The power of good photos on Etsy.

An incredibly popular photo.
Whenever I make a new thing I am pretty excited about it, and I like to imagine it is going to be a popular item, and that it will do well for me.

I imagined that would be the case for these cute little porcelain houses. But for whatever reason that hasn't happened. What has happened, though, is that the above photo has become popular. On Etsy, members are encouraged to 'curate' the front page. That is, you access the tool that creates a collection of 16 items which look good together, you give it a name and some word tags, save it, and perhaps the Etsy staff will feature that collection on the Etsy front page. It used to be that you would include one of your own shop items, but 'treasury' making became slightly more altruistic when a rule was brought in that you could not include your own items if you wanted the treasury to be considered for the front page.

These little houses have never made it to a treasury which has hit the Etsy front page, but they do make it into a lot of Etsy treasuries, whose curators hope will make the front page. Which is great for me as a shop owner. The more treasuries your items are included in, the greater chance you have of your item being featured on the front page of Etsy. And that in turn almost always leads to an increase in sales that day.
Treasuries also bring everyone one step closer to your items, helping them stand out in the sea of handmade which is Etsy.

A lot of emphasis is placed on product photography on Etsy. Photography is something which I have thankfully invested a lot of time and money in because of my own interests in it. I am fortunate to have an excellent camera, and the knowledge of how to use it. I can only imagine how daunting and frustrating it must be for those shop owners who don't have the skills to take good photos of their products.

So this photo has become a workhorse which drags people into my shop, something I did not intend, but am grateful for. When I took this photo, I was simply trying to find a fun way to show the scale of size of the houses. Instead I have created an attractive visual magnet. Awesome!
